How to Make Homemade Scented Candles and Precautions?

Homemade scented candles can not only add a warm atmosphere to your home, but also let you enjoy the fun of creation. In this guide, we will cover how to simply make scented candles, including the required materials and steps. At the same time, we will also remind you of some safety precautions, and hope that these simple steps and precautions will help you successfully make your favorite scented candles!

1. Tools Production

Heating furnace, wax melting pot, candle wick, wax wick holder, extended stirring spoon, electronic scale, thermometer, electronic lighter, candle jar

2. Materials Production

1) Wax Material:

Try to choose natural wax instead of artificial wax. Common natural waxes include soy wax, beeswax, and coconut wax.

Soy wax is a plant-based wax extracted from soybeans. It comes in small delicate flakes and is known for being non-toxic and environmentally friendly. The waste produced is biodegradable. Soy wax is commonly used for making aromatherapy candles, wax flakes for aromatherapy, molding wax, and more. It has a milky white appearance with a subtle milky fragrance. It can be blended with beeswax to enhance hardness and create a smoother wax surface. Additionally, wax pigments can be incorporated for color variation.

Beeswax: Beeswax is a more environmentally friendly wax. 100% pure beeswax candles can also purify the air when burning. Therefore, beeswax candles are called "nobles" among candles. Usually we choose to mix it with other waxes to increase hardness and smoothness.

Coconut wax: Coconut candles burn slowly, produce a clean burn, and emit minimal smoke.

2) Wax wicks

Common types of wax wicks include wood wicks and cotton wicks.

Cotton wicks are clean, smokeless, and long-burning.

Wood wicks make a crackling sound during the burning process. Some people have a special fondness for the sound of burning wood because it evokes a unique sense of warmth.

3. Precautions for Making Scented Candles:

1) When the wax material temperature reaches 90 degrees, it is almost completely melted. Remove the inner pot and wait for the temperature to return to normal. Once the temperature drops to 80 degrees, add pigment (skip this step if you don't want to add it). When the temperature drops to 60 degrees, add essential oil.

2) Add 3-5g of essential oil to 100g of candle wax. Depending on the purity of the essential oil and personal preference, you can adjust the amount accordingly.

3) Stir the mixture evenly. Once the temperature reaches 40 degrees, you can pour it into the container. Aim to maintain the temperature close to room temperature; otherwise, the solidification process may result in cracks on the wax surface.

4. Maintenance Issues of Scented Candles

1) Candle storage

Candles should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry place. Excessive temperatures or direct sunlight can cause the candle's surface to melt, affecting the fragrance intensity when lit.

2Lighting the candle

Before lighting the candle, trim the wick to 5mm-8mm; when burning the candle for the first time, let it burn for 2-3 hours. The candle has a "burning memory. If the wax around the wick is not evenly heated and the surface is not completely melted during the first lighting, the candle will only burn around the wick.

3) Increase the burning time

Always pay attention to keeping the length of the candle wick at 5-8mm. Trimming the candle wick can help the candle burn evenly and prevent the emission of black smoke and soot on the candle cup. Try to let the candle burn for 2 hours each time, but not more than 4 hours; if you wish to burn it for an extended period, extinguish the candle every 4 hours, trim the wick to 5mm, and relight it.

4) Extinguish the candle

Don't blow out the candle with your mouth! This will not only damage the candle but also produce black smoke, turning the wonderful aroma of the scented candle into smoke. You can use a candle extinguisher to extinguish the candle or use a candle snuffer hook tool to dip the candle wick into wax oil. Stop burning when the candle is less than 2cm.
